No BoundariesDance Team

Where Students With Special Needs Take Center Stage

For over 30 years, Encore School of Dance in Saginaw has been teaching people of all ages the art of dancing from cheer and tumbling to ballet and competitive team dance. Yet one group of gifted dancers in their midst is quietly stealing the show. Now in its twelfth season, No Boundaries Dance Team is shattering misconceptions and defying expectations for one particular reason: every member of the dance team has special needs.

At the helm of this inspiring program is Rachel Hudler Grimes, who has built a career that goes far beyond choreography and dance routines. As a dance educator, certified personal trainer, and the school’s Community Outreach Director, she has dedicated more than two decades of her life building a community in and out of the studio, embodying the school’s “You Belong Here” mantra. Yet perhaps her most endearing work lies with the life-changing No Boundaries Dance Team.

“The idea had been on my mind and my heart for years,” explained Rachel, who has a close cousin with special needs. “The school really encouraged me to run with it.”

Designed for individuals with diverse physical and intellectual abilities, No Boundaries is more than just a dance class — it’s a space where students with special needs are seen, celebrated, and encouraged to shine. Inside her classes, the focus extends beyond technique. Rachel blends skill-building with self-expression, creating an environment where dancers feel safe to try, grow, and succeed at their own pace.

“You have to be flexible,” shared Rachel. “You need to be willing to shift and be open to new ideas.”

For students in the program, that flexibility is key. Rachel thoughtfully tailors each class to meet dancers where they are, ensuring that every participant — regardless of ability — can fully engage in the experience. The result is not only improved coordination and conditioning, but also increased confidence, social connection, and a sense of belonging.

Families notice the difference in their loved ones, too. Parents often share stories of their children opening up, forming friendships, and discovering newfound sense of self worth and independence through dance. Performances become milestones, not just for the dancers, but for entire families who witness their loved ones stepping into the spotlight with pride.

“They love it,” said Rachel. “Families come back every year. It’s really become
a community.”

As Community Outreach Director, Rachel actively brings dance into the broader community through performances, partnerships, and events that support local charities. Each year the team performs four to six times, including their annual Christmas show, but Rachel is always on the lookout for more ways to showcase her students’ talents.

For some of her students, No Boundaries opens the door for other opportunities. Many of them progress to the point where they go on to join other dance teams. One of her students, Alex, an 11-year-old boy with Downs syndrome, joined a hip hop dance team and submitted a dance routine with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) in Texas that propelled him to the nationals.

“It is so gratifying to see students of mine, who were so shy at first, become the star of the show,” Rachel shared with pride.

Of course, Rachel isn’t alone in her mission. Michelle Ritenour, the owner of Encore School of Dance, has been incredibly supportive of her cause from the beginning, and even offered No Boundaries for free in its early years. Rachel also has the help of her assistant, Jenny, who has Down’s syndrome. The two have been friends since high school and have worked together for many years. Together they bring a work ethic and perspective that helps bridge gaps, inviting people of all backgrounds and abilities to experience the power of dance.

Looking ahead, Rachel hopes to expand the No Boundaries dance program and continue to grow it where multiple teams of various ages are needed to fill
the demand.

For local families searching for meaningful activities, or adults ready to try something new, Rachel’s classes offer more than just dance — they provide connection,
confidence, and a reminder that there truly are no boundaries when it comes to discovering joy through dance.
