food·ie /’foode/ noun informal “a person with a particular interest in food.”
Being a foodie means having a deep passion for food, exploring new flavors, and appreciating the art of cooking outside of my own kitchen. It’s about seeking out unique dining experiences, savoring every bite, and understanding the cultural significance of dishes. Beyond just eating, being a foodie is also learning about culture, and the best way for this Canadian to have learned about Texas culture was to eat my weight in all things southern. As a non native Texan, I have loved trying new restaurants in and around town– and in particular when my northern friends and family come for a visit from the motherland, here are a few of my top choices as I showcase Texas and the spirit of the south:
Babe’s Chicken
Nothing screams “south” and “everything is bigger in Texas” than Babe’s Chicken and a heaping platter of deep fried chicken put before you. It’s famous for its mouth watering fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and homemade biscuits. The family-style dining experience and welcoming atmosphere make it a great place to appreciate a tried and true Southern experience. Bring stretchy pants for your inevitable expanded girth.
Marty B’s
I love this place. Marty B’s is a fantastic outdoor venue in Bartonville, Texas, that captures the essence of the Texas Hill Country. The menu features Texas specialties such as steaks, Tex-Mex, burgers, and my favorite– the BBQ brisket or pulled pork tacos. The restaurant provides a warm, modern ranch atmosphere complemented by live music (I love the 80’s bands) and the large outdoor, casual seating area. This has become an absolute must for the Canadians when they are here visiting Texas.
Brewed
Now this is a super popular restaurant and coffeehouse on Magnolia Ave, in Fort Worth– known for its cozy atmosphere, craft coffee, and Southern-inspired comfort food. Located in the trendy Near Southside district, Brewed has earned a reputation as the “locals’ living room,” offering a warm and inviting space for guests to enjoy breakfast, brunch, and dinner. The menu features a mix of classic and creative dishes, from chicken and waffles to gourmet burgers, all made with high-quality ingredients. To be fair, I have only ever had breakfast here– and it was my introduction to grits with my eggs Benny. The. Best. Ever. Add some Cowboy coffee to your order and you are all set.
Los Molcajetes
We don’t have great Mexican food back home, and Tex Mex is the norm for all things Texas. If you’re craving a hearty and authentic Tex-Mex meal, Los Molcajetes in Roanoke, Texas, is a must-visit. From the moment you step through the door, you’re greeted with the warm, inviting atmosphere of a classic Mexican cantina, and the aroma of sizzling fajitas and fresh tortillas sets the tone for a truly satisfying dining experience. I also appreciate the oversized margaritas just to round out the evening. Being a foodie in the South means savoring rich, flavorful dishes, embracing traditions, and celebrating bold, comfort-filled cuisine. Southern transformation complete.
